Community Exercise Programs for persons living with Parkinson’s Disease

Starting or continuing a schedule of regular exercise can make a big difference in your mobility, both in the short and long term. People with PD also report the physical (and mental) benefits of swimming, cycling, dancing, and even non-contact boxing. In fact, several research studies have shown that regular exercise routines of walking, strength training, or Tai Chi can help to maintain, or even improve, mobility, balance, and coordination in people with PD.

The APDA-Georgia Chapter has prioritized investment in community exercise programs as a goal. We are a sponsor of PD Gladiators (external link), which operates a network of over 50 weekly group exercise programs adapted for people with Parkinson’s throughout metro Atlanta, including Parkinson’s Movement Classes offered by the YMCA of Metro Atlanta at almost all full-service branches.

We have also sponsored the development of “Community Exercise For People with Parkinson’s Disease,” a course offered by MDT Education Solutions, which has prepared over 60 personal trainers and fitness instructors to provide safe, high-quality group and individual exercise programming for people at all stages of PD.
