Award details

One year fellowship up to a maximum of $50,000 will be awarded to post-doctoral (MD, MD/PhD, or PhD) research trainees. These fellowships are not renewable for a second year of funding.

The applicants will receive notification of the decision in July 2022. The APDA fellowship year runs from September 1st to August 31st.


APDA Post-doc fellowships are intended to support post-doctoral trainees at U.S. research institutions whose research training focuses on new insights into the pathophysiology, etiology, and/or treatment of Parkinson’s disease. Proposals can address research questions anywhere along the pipeline from basic science to rehabilitation-focused projects.


Applicants must have completed their MD, PhD, MD/PhD or clinical residency program within two (2) years of the onset of the proposed award.

Application Process and Proposal

Description of the proposed research plan should not exceed three (3) pages and should consist of background, specific aims, research design, and a statement of significance for Parkinson disease research. The applicant’s NIH biosketch, the mentor’s NIH biosketch, as well as three (3) letters of reference should be included. Letters should be from the mentor and any other key collaborators. The applicant should list all current and pending support, including sponsoring agency, amount and dates for awards. The application should indicate how other sponsored research complements or supplements the present proposal.

The three page limit only applies to the length of the proposal, not the entire application.


Funding is not to be used for any of the following items:

  • Indirect costs.
  • Institutional overhead.
  • Travel expenses.
  • Publication costs higher than $1,000.
  • Equipment costs higher than $8,000.

Grant Disbursement

Funds will be awarded as follows, subject to availability of funds:

  • 50% on or about September 2022.
  • 25% on receipt of an acceptable six (6) month scientific report.
  • 25% on receipt of an acceptable twelve (12) month scientific and financial reports.
