OUR SIGNATURE PROGRAMS

The American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA) is proud to offer a wide range of Parkinson’s disease (PD) programs, resources, education, and support as we strive to help everyone impacted by PD live life to the fullest.

APDA’s signature programs are provided free of charge and have been
designed specifically for people with PD and their care partners.

APDA Parkinson’s Good Start™

A two-part education program for people within three years of a PD diagnosis and their care partners and family members. Education and support at this key stage can empower people with PD to better navigate the journey ahead. This program provides a comprehensive overview of PD, helping attendees learn about:

  • What Parkinson’s disease is
  • Treatment options for PD
  • The healthcare team for PD management
  • The role of rehabilitation and exercise in PD
  • Medication management for optimum functioning with PD
  • Coping strategies for living with PD
  • Community resources for people with PD

PRESS™ (Parkinson’s Roadmap for Education and Support Services™)

An eight-week education and support program for those diagnosed with PD in the last five years and their care partners. This program is facilitated by a credentialed mental health professional and is conducted in a support group format. It aims to help attendees feel empowered and optimistic by providing education, emotional support, and a comfortable space to share coping strategies. PD-focused session topics include:

  1. What’s Next After Diagnosis
  2. Medication Management
  3. Importance of Exercise
  4. Dealing with Physical Symptoms
  5. Impact on Daily Coping and Relationships
  6. Tips for Daily Living
  7. Caring for Others, Caring for Yourself
  8. Building Your Healthcare Team

PRESS ON™

An eight-week education and support program for those who have been living with PD for five or more years and are struggling with symptoms that make dailylife harder. This program is facilitated by a credentialed mental health professional and is conducted in a support group format. It offers those in the middle stages of PD the opportunity to connect with others for emotional support and sharing, while also providing education about disease progression
and planning for the future. Session topics include:

  3. Safety, Environment, Exercise
  4. Mood, Cognition, Behavior
  5. Impact of Parkinson’s on Daily Coping and Relationships

APDA Care Partner Connection™

An eight-week program for care partners of people with PD, offering theopportunity to connect with other care partners for emotional support and sharing. Facilitated by a credentialed mental health professional, this program was designed for those who are looking for a space to share their feelings and learn more about PD caregiving considerations. The program also provides education about planning for the future and practical resources. Session topics
include:

  4. PD is a Family Disease – What Worries You?
  5. Understanding PD from a Care Partner Point of View

Connecting Through Art™ / Conectando a Través del Arte™

Offered in both English and Spanish, this creative arts program was developed to provide those impacted by PD the space and ability to express feelings andemotions through a creative activity, while also connecting with others who share some of the same challenges and concerns. While these aspects have all been shown to enhance mood and quality of life, the creative activity itself may also help to improve visual-cognitive skills, hand dexterity, and general motor function.
