APDA’s Public Policy & Advocacy team was on hand yesterday as lawmakers unveiled the Harmonizing Environmental Analyses and Launching Therapeutic Hubs to Yield Bolstered Research and Innovation in Neurological Science (HEALTHY BRAINS) Act (H.R. 7779.) Introduced by Representative Gus Bilirakis (R-FL) and Representative Suhas Subramanyam (D-VA), the sweeping bipartisan initiative is aimed at strengthening federal efforts to protect brain health and address the growing threat of neurodegenerative diseases.
The legislation represents a major federal investment in protecting brain health. It seeks to prevent, treat, and slow the progression of diseases like Parkinson’s by optimizing federal research activities and strengthening the nation’s ability to protect current and future generations.
Addressing Toxic Exposures and Environmental Risk
Under the proposal, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services would establish new research centers dedicated to understanding how toxic exposures and environmental risk factors contribute to Parkinson’s disease and related neurological conditions.
Each center would:
- Strengthen collaboration among researchers, health professionals, nonprofit organizations, patients, and caregivers
- Launch a national education program focused on reducing toxic exposures and other risk factors
- Expand research training and prevention strategies
- Create a national data clearinghouse to drive evidence-based solutions
