Target Audience

This activity is intended for social workers and psychologists engaged in the care of patients with Parkinson’s disease.

Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

  • Identify key psychological, emotional, and behavioral stressors associated with caregiving that place family caregivers at risk for distress, burnout, and compromised mental health
  • Describe the effects of chronic caregiver stress on psychological functioning, interpersonal relationships, and care outcomes
  • Apply evidence-based interventions and resilience-building strategies to support caregiver well-being within clinical, community, or integrated care settings
  • Assess caregiver needs and levels of distress using appropriate psychosocial screening methods to guide clinical decision-making and treatment planning
  • Integrate caregiver support systems and referral pathways, including interdisciplinary and community resources, to enhance continuity of care and caregiver outcomes
  • Implement strategies to foster social connection and peer support among caregivers, including practical approaches such as online support groups, community programs, or caregiver networks
  • Identify early signs of caregiver social withdrawal and intervene proactively to prevent isolation and promote ongoing engagement

Credit Designation

Continuing Psychologist Education

Continuing Education (CE) credits for psychologists are provided through the co-sponsorship of the American Psychological Association (APA) Office of Continuing Education in Psychology (CEP). The APA CEP Office maintains responsibility for the content of the programs.

Credit Designation: This program offers 1.0 continuing education credits for psychologists.

Continuing Social Work Education

As a Jointly Accredited Organization, Postgraduate Institute for Medicine is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. Postgraduate Institute for Medicine maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive 1.0 Clinical continuing education credits.
